What Writers Ought to Do

I’m often asked if there is something I think writers ought to do, and recently in an interview I heard myself say: “Several things. Love words, agonize over sentences. And pay attention to the world.”

Reminds me of a favorite quote from the last Harry Potter book by J. K. Rowling. Dumbledore says, “Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it.” I love thinking of words as a source of magic, because it is true. Storytelling is powerful.
