The Story of Our Stories
Cinderella was beautiful, they say.
It was, in fact, her beauty that saved her,
not all that sweeping of ashes.
Her foot, after all,
was so dainty
as to capture
a prince.
Have you measured your own foot lately?
Surely Snow White served
all those little men well,
scrubbing, mending, cooking,
and,
if Walt is to be trusted,
singing the whole time.
It was her beauty, though,
that earned a kiss
from a prince,
the kiss that brought her
back from the sleep
of death.
But then it was her beauty
that brought on the poisoned sleep, too.
So what does that tell us?
Only love could make the velveteen rabbit real,
but all Geppetto’s love
couldn’t rescue
Pinocchio.
The lesson in all this?
We must choose our stories
with the most
profound
care.
