Mirrors never complemented
the girl I used to be.
Hair not blonde enough.
Eyes not blue enough.
Teeth,
oh, those teeth!
Too big.
Much too big.
Breasts too small.
Eyebrows too heavy.
Skinny,
when the world
wanted voluptuous.
And all wrapped in a pall
of self-consciousness
that deadened the very air.
Old now,
I surprise myself
in the morning mirror.
“Hey, lady,” the mirror says,
“you look like somebody
I would like
very much
to know.”
